The Conference in Warsaw – ”The family, The Rights of the Child and Their Protection”

On September 26th, 2019, under the name “The Family, The Rights of the Child and Their Protection” on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international conference was held at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Faculty of Law in Warsaw.The conference was organized by the hosts (Faculty of Law, University of Warsaw), the Institute for Legal Culture, the Polish Ministry of Education, the Polish Ministry of Family, the Polish Ministry of Science, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and many other significant factors in the scientific, public and political life of Poland.

In the plenary part of the conference, a professor of our Faculty, doc. Dr Dragan Dakic, at the invitation of the organizers, outlined the main challenges facing the concept of the best interests of the child under the Article 3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which arose from the development of new technologies in the field of biomedicine (artificial reproduction and genetic engineering). Besides pointing out to the problems encountered in the application of the principle of “best interests of the child” in decision-making procedures on medical interventions / treatments, doc. Dr Dragan Dakic offered an interpretative framework for Article 3 and the aforementioned principle that would eliminate existing problems in their application and help successfully make decisions in the field of health care provision.

“It is a special honor to speak about the Convention on the Rights of the Child in its cradle – the country whose initiative was to present it to the United Nations. This convention is the most widely accepted international legal document and as such deserves to be discussed at a conference of the highest scientific and political rank, such as the one in Warsaw, ” said Dr
Dakic.
